Playability: The Boston neck is a slender, low profile neck that is shaped for fast accurate fingering. The ebony finger board is polished to a fast smooth surface making slides hammer-ons pull offs and all left hand fingering techniques faster and easier. The shape is comfortable and natural for large and small hands. Other makes of banjos in this price range generally do not have ebony fingerboards.
- Deerings fret work is accurate and precise to insure accurate intonation over the entire fingerboard.
- The guitar style tuners and geared fifth string peg are smooth and accurate and very positive in operation.
- The two way adjustable truss rod allows precision adjustment to maintain best playability without buzzing.
Tone: The Boston STEEL rim is 3/16 of an inch thick. It's mass gives the banjo a clear, crisp tone that penetrates past other instruments and is powerfully dynamic. It is often chosen by studio musicians for the clear and clean recordability. It is also popular with parking lot pickers because of it's sheer volume and dynamic power.
The 11" diameter rim is the standard size that all popular heads are made to fit. The customer can try a variety of heads to create different tones.
Imported banjos have rims of aluminum or soft wood and pot metal. Neither have the density of Steel and therefore don't ring clear and bright. The Boston rim rings like a bell because of the weight, density and hardness of the steel.
The massive strength of the steel rim allows the head to be tightened as tight as desired. Banjos with aluminum and soft wood pots are not strong enough to handle the tight head tension that is crucial for the beautiful banjo tone that every player wants.
While most imported banjos have little or no warranty, Deering’s world class quality features allow Deering to easily offer a Lifetime Warranty on the Boston banjo.
The Boston Banjo is easily convertable to an openback banjo and can also be used for clawhammer style by simply removing the resonator and flange plates. Not all banjos are convertable.
